By Zhejiang Library | July 24, 2023

Recently, Zhejiang Library has launched an online exhibition called "Characteristic Literature Exhibition of Zhejiang Library" in both Chinese and English, showcasing the rich collection accumulated by the library over more than a century.

The history of Zhejiang Library dates back to the Hangzhou Pavilion Library, which was built in the 26th year of the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (1900) in the Qing Dynasty. Over the course of more than a century, the library has developed and amassed a collection system that is rich in content, diverse in form, and reflective of local characteristics. Zhejiang Library is particularly known for its collection of ancient books and historical documents. In addition to the famous "Siku Quanshu (Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature)", the library also houses over 150,000 rare books, including scriptures from the Northern, Sui, and Tang Dynasties, wooden tablets from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, block-printed editions after careful review and collation from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, manuscripts of celebrities, and rubbings from bronzeware or stone tablet. The library also holds valuable modern literature, such as revolutionary literature, early rare newspapers and periodicals, and first issues of modern periodicals.

To provide worldwide users with a better understanding of this characteristic literature, Zhejiang Library has selected some documents and introduced them in both Chinese and English through an online exhibition. The exhibition consists of eight sections, including "Rare Books, Modern Books, Letters from Celebrities, Local Collection in Zhejiang Province, Rubbing and Seal Impression, Calligraphy and Ink Wash Painting, Ancient Map, and Woodblock Painting". Additionally, the online exhibition features a special section called "Classics Librarian Connect", which uses videos to tell the stories behind this literature.

The launch of this online exhibition not only shows the development process and characteristics of the library's collection over the past 100 years but also provides a way for users worldwide to gain a general understanding of the culture and history of Zhejiang. Whether through online exhibitions or physical collections, Zhejiang Library will always be committed to providing more and better literature resources and high-quality services for all users.
