The May Fourth Movement Ignites the Chinese Spirit

Carrying forward the spirit of the May Fourth Movement, and spreading the power of youth. On May 1-8, 2019, Zhejiang Library held an exhibition themed “Centenary of the May Fourth Movement and the Chinese spirit” on the entrance hall.

On April 19, 2019, when presiding the 14^th collective learning of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of CPC, General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed to commemorate the May Fourth Movement and carry forward its spirit. He said that we must intensify the study of the May Fourth Movement and its spirit, to guide the youth to work hard for a decisive victory of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, the great victory for socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, and the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

With the development of history, some quintessence that is rooted in the human heart is deposited with time, and still shines brightly, just as the spirit of the May Fourth Movement, which represents the spirit of ideological liberation and patriotism, and is an indispensable and extremely important part of the Chinese spirit. The Chinese nation is a multi-ethnic country with a long history, and our forefathers sprinkled their blood and youth on this land and left a strong trace in history with their shining spirit. 

Human being always builds greater civilizations based on the achievements of ancestors. The time-honored Chinese nation has too much spiritual wealth worth cherishing. For example, the long-standing patriotism, the unbreakable spirit of unity, the high-minded moral spirit, the hereditary striving spirit, the increasingly stronger self-improvement spirit, the scientific spirit of pursuing genuine knowledge, the spirit of reform and innovation to keep pace with the times, the unswerving spirit of openness, the honest and friendly spirit, and the scientific socialist spirit. They are all the spiritual wealth extracted from deeds of our forefathers, and worth learning and appreciating for the younger generation.

At 9:30 am on May 4, several young volunteers were invited by Zhejiang Library to the exhibition and shared their own stories, including volunteer of G20 summit, educator of blood donation vehicle, volunteer teacher, sign language volunteer, and volunteer of audio description.

 “This is my first time attending such activity that integrates exhibition and speech. It is a perfect combination. These young people earn recognition of the whole society with their own efforts. I am proud of them.” “The efforts of volunteers make Hangzhou a warmer city”……This activity won the readers’ approval.

This exhibition has enhanced the national self-confidence of young people, encouraged the inheritance of the national spirit, and laid a spiritual foundation for the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
