Rubbings of epitaphs of the Tang Dynasty from Luoyang Exhibited in Zhejiang Library

March 20 10:00 The opening ceremony of the exhibition of rubbings of epitaphs of the Tang Dynasty from Luoyang, presided over by Ma Yanxia, deputy chief librarian of Luoyang Normal University, is held in Zhejiang Library. Ren Qun, associate inspector of Zhejiang Cultural and Tourism Department, Cui Weigong, head of the expert committee for the construction of Henan Public Cultural Service System, Shi Mingde, head of Henan Public Culture Research Center, Xu Jie, secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang Library, Liu Xiaoqing, former deputy chief librarian of Zhejiang Library, Prof. Li Hu, chief librarian of the library of Luoyang Normal University, Prof. Mao Yangguang, deputy head of International Research Center of Heluo Culture, and Gu Tao, doctor of calligraphy of Academy of Fine Arts of Luoyang Normal University are present at the ceremony.

The ceremony is addressed by the secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang Library Xu Jie, who states that Zhejiang Library has long valued the exploration, protection and inheritance of the traditional culture and unique local culture. This exhibition serves as the bridge that connects Zhijiang Culture and Heluo Culture and plays an essential role to promote the traditional Chinese culture and highlight the charm of stone inscriptions and calligraphy.

Cui Weigong, head of the expert committee for the construction of Henan Public Cultural Service System, acknowledges the significance of this exhibition, which presents the epitaph culture of the Tang Dynasty in Central China, reflects the calligraphic achievements of the Tang Dynasty in Heluo Region, promotes the traditional artistic essences such as ancient calligraphy, sculpture and decoration, and helps spread the traditional art in Central China, enhance the art literacy and facilitate cultural inheritance.

Shi Mingde, lead of this event and head of Henan Public Culture Research Center, introduces the background and contents of this exhibition supported by China National Arts Fund. Themed around "Promoting Excellent Traditional Culture and Highlighting the Charm of Stone Inscriptions and Calligraphy", this event exhibits classic epitaphs throughout the Tang Dynasty excavated in Luoyang, including the Epitaph of Wang Lin by Yan Zhenqing and the Epitaph of Yan Ren, the only epitaph written with the regular script, by the master of cursive calligraphy Zhang Xu.

Ren Qun, associate inspector of Zhejiang Cultural and Tourism Department, concludes the ceremony by declaring the official launch of the exhibition.

Prof. Mao Yangguang, deputy head of International Research Center of Heluo Culture, and Gu Tao, doctor of calligraphy of Academy of Fine Arts of Luoyang Normal University guide the guests and audiences throughout the exhibition with professional interpretation.

Pei Jianping, inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage rubbing skills from Luoyang demonstrates the skills and shares ideas with fans of calligraphy and ancient books.

Over 170 epitaphs by different leading figures of varied styles in the Tang Dynasty are exhibited in the areas for epitaphs by historical celebrities, interactive experience as well as epitaphs in the regular script style, cursive script style, seal script style and official script style, representing not only the excellence of the calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty but the original art information such as decorative patterns and sculptures. The authors of the works include famous calligraphers such as Yan Zhenqing, Xu Hao, Liang Shengqing and Zhangxu and grassroots calligraphers. The exhibition will end on April 8. Pei Jianping, inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage rubbing skills from Luoyang will demonstrate the skills on March 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 at Zhejiang Library.
