At 2:30 on January 13th, 2019, the “Piglets Celebrating Chinese New Year” parent-child activity sponsored by Zhejiang Library and Yiguo Art Institute was started on time in the audio-visual room on the second floor of Zhejiang Library! This class was given by Miss Cao Luyao, a teacher from Yiguo Art Institute for children.

Miss Luyao first had the children feel the excitement of the Chinese Year by showing them pictures. The theme of this activity was Piglets Celebrating Chinese New Year by making the Chinese Year hangings which would make everyone feel the coming of the Pig Year in advance! After the lively atmosphere was warmed up, Miss Luyao began to teach the children to carry out the handcrafting activity of the day—Chinese New Year Hangings, to create hangings with the “pig” element by tearing and sticking the scrap magazine onto the mirror paper.

Before everybody began their production, Miss Luyao asked the children to first observe the characteristics of the pig. The children observed the round head of the pig, the big nose, the fat body and the long tail. Nothing was too difficult to beat our children! Next was the production part which was a good opportunity for the children to show their talents! Each was a small artist who worked with his/her parents to create a piglet belonging to his/her own family.

After the completion of the tearing and sticking, Miss Luyao said, “Our paintings have not yet been finished!” Then she asked the children a question: what were the customs of each family at the time of the New Year? Set off firecrackers! Hang lanterns! Paste the God of Door to doors! And my favorite New Year feast! New Year’s Eve and red envelopes! All of the children present shared with others their own hometown customs! Miss Luyao went on to say, “Children, please have your little pigs celebrate the New Year together with you! Please pick up the oil pastels and create a good New Year atmosphere for our pigs!”

Finally, everyone worked lanyards through the pieces and stamped their works with beautiful seals to make their piglet pictures more Chinese-flavored before they took photos together.
